WestJet Review - by deblogan

From the beginning of my interaction with WestJet associates to the very end I was made to feel welcome and valued! While my flight was not delayed, the one in the gate next to mine was and I was able to observe how this was handled by the staff. I loved the way that passengers were told more specifics of the delay than is customary, and it certainly engendered a dramatic reduction in the number of angry passengers. Aboard the jet the seats were more roomy that I was expecting, having flown with a number of other airlines in the past several years. The lack of meals was no problem - snacks and drinks were offered cheerfully. The welcoming speech was friendly, amusing and informative, and while there can be no doubt that the safety of the passengers and crew is taken very seriously, the presentation of the safety features was done in a way that kept the passengers' attention better than most. I appreciated the occasional dialogue from the cockpit about where we were and weather comments.

just was wondering what web site do I go under to check my flight status when I have already booked in and paid and have received my confirmation number. I know there is a site where i just have to plug in my confirmation Number and all the information pops up....thanks CHRIS

Hi Chris, select your seat from 24 hours up to 60 minutes before you fly and print your boarding pass before you go to the airport with WestJet's Web check-in service (Flights within Canada only) click on this link WestJet Web Check-In

This was a return flight from Edmonton. I booked it quite last minute, and still managed to get a very good fare.

The difference between the service on WestJet and on Air Canada Jazz (see their section for review) was like night and day. Unlike Air Canada, where I was forced to check in by automatic check in (which wound up not working), I had my choice with WestJet. The agent checking me in was very friendly and the process was finished in a matter of seconds.

The plane was much bigger than with AC (a 737), but also quite dated. That being said, it was much more comfortable to fly down in this jet than in a propeller operated aircraft. The flight time was about 15 minutes faster, too. Despite such a short flight time (20 minutes, I swear), juice and a snack were served. More importantly, though, the entire flight crew was upbeat and came around to speak to passengers instead of hiding. The pilot and co-pilot both came on to give information and thanked us for our business. While some may find this trite, one actually felt that their thanks was sincere.

As the price was the same and the service far superior, I would not hesitate to fly with WestJet again. It's always nice to know that your business is appreciated, and not to feel like a burden on a flight attendant's day.

I believe I've flown with Westjet between 10-15 times. The longest of which was from Vancouver to New York via Toronto.

What I like :

*Their plush leather seats. It's amazing how good seats can make a flight that much easier to bear. I've never had a huge problem with the legroom on Westjet flights, but as always there could always be more of it. I'm sure all airlines are well aware of leg problems people have had because of the lack of legroom, and the fact that they did not got up to stretch their legs during a long trip. I can't remember what the ailment is called. :(

*My experiences with their staff has always been pleasant. The staff make it a point to create a friendly environment on the flight. From cracking jokes while introducing the staff to having contests during flights, it's all good. On the flights I've been on most of their staff has been more than willing to sit down and chat while they're not busy on the flight. It's been awhile since I've flown on Air Canada, but that airline could certainly learn a thing or two about service and atmosphere from the employees at Westjet.

*Most flights I've been on have had TV on board! On the back of each seat there's a small personal TV, and they hand out headsets before the flight. I've usually found about 20 channels to choose from - with a couple sports channels, some news, and other Canadian content. Unfortunately they only keep the TV on while the plane is at cruising altitude - it's kept off during takeoff and landing.

*Westjet only has one class. Pretty revolutionary if you ask me. They treat everyone the same. All passengers are treated as 'first-class' - if you know what I mean. ;)

*Pricing. Before booking flights I've often compared Westjet's rates with that of Air Canada. Most of the time it's for trips within Canada, and most of the time Air Canada is much more expensive.

*Delays, or lack thereof. I cannot recall a single Westjet flight that I've been on that was significantly delayed or arrived late. I'm sure it happens to Westjet flights just as often as it does to other airlines - perhaps I've just been lucky.

*Free newspapers. Another small thing, but it makes the flights go just a bit faster. At the Vancouver airport the Westjet check-in desks usually have newspapers for customers to take. They supply The Vancouver Sun and The Province if I remember correctly.

*No smoking! I believe all airlines now have restrictions in place such that there is no smoking at any time anywhere on any flight. I like that. I seem to recall being on a flight that allowed smoking some 10 or so years ago, and that wasn't fun to say the least.

*About six months ago I was booked on a flight to come back to Vancouver from Los Angeles, California. It so happened that I decided to go to a waterpark near my hotel in Anaheim on that particular day. At that time I did not realise how far away LAX was from the hotel - which was just across the street from Disneyland. To make a long story short, I found myself running quite late, and I ended up having to take a limo(Lincoln Towncar I believe) to the airport just to get there on time. I did call the airline ahead of time to let them know while I was in the limo, and I think that helped. Luckily the driver got me to LAX - 36 miles away - in just 45 minutes. I arrived at the airport at 6:22 for a 7PM flight, and boarded just in the nick of time. As you can well imagine, I was the last person to board the flight. Anyhow, I think a lot of other airlines would have closed the boarding gate and sent the flight on its way, but on this occasion Westjet waited for me. I was very lucky, but I do give Westjet a lot of credit.

I've flown WestJet a few times a year for the past few years, and have always been impressed with their service. Not once have I run into any problem- never any delays, problems with tickets or luggage, which I can't say for the other airlines I've taken.

Regina-Calgary route quite often and have never been dissatisfied. The leather seats are comfy and roomy, there is free satellite tv on the back of every seat, and the airplane is always very clean. For a one hour flight, the 'snack pack and a drink' they provide is adequate. I've never had a problem with my luggage not arriving and the most I've had to wait for it on the baggage carrier is 15 minutes. Just a note to the recent poster who was upset about the seat booking. WestJet offers online booking, so you can book your seat online 24 hours ahead of your flight (maybe that's what those passengers did?). This way you can skip the regular check-in line and go straight to baggage drop, with your seat already picked by yourself online. I used this feature for the first time about a month ago and I plan on doing this from now on, very quick and convenient.
